The expansion of Bodriggy Primary School has been delivered as part of an ambitious and sustainable programme to increase the capacity of schools across Cornwall. The single-storey extension provides four new state-of-the-art KS2 teaching rooms, heated through the use of air source heat pumps and a hybrid ventilation system with MVHR and opening winows. These new classrooms increase the capacity of the school from 315 pupils to 420.
In dialogue with the council, school and the multi-academy trust, a new approach to providing self-contained and separately serviced unisex WCs was proposed. Communal handwashing off the main corridor improves informal supervision but without compromising the pupils privacy. The works also included a new single-storey dining hall extension, providing a light and airy space with large bifold doors to the outside.
The new extension has been delivered utilising cost effective and traditional construction techniques, including standardised offsite manufactured timber roof trusses and masonry walls. This provided flexibility to utilise the local supply chain in Cornwall and reduce overall costs. The materiality was carefully considered, with a light grey natural clay brick finish which responds to the existing school building. Dark grey coloured window frames and metalwork provide the building with a contemporary aesthetic suited to its overall form, function and performance.
