Brunel Building

  • Client Cornwall College
  • Location Camborne, Cornwall
  • Cost £3.6m
  • Completed 2003

Part of a wider Poynton Bradbury designed masterplan for Cornwall College, this project brought together the Centre for Construction Excellence and the Automotive Engineering department into a single shared facility.

Alongside traditional teaching rooms the new facility provides a range of specialist motor vehicle teaching areas, including high-tech garages and workshops, testing bays, full-bodyworks and spray booths, and an HGV workshop.

The large two-storey triangular courtyard formed by the two new facilities are covered by a tensile roof structure. This provides the students and lecturers with outdoor construction areas that are fully protected from the weather all year round. This large practical teaching space has sufficient height for a range of construction and engineering exercises.

Students working and learning in the Brunel Building have gone on to have exciting and successful careers, working for Bentley Motors and as part of Formula One engineering teams.
