Old County Hall

  • Client Acorn Blue
  • Location Truro, Cornwall
  • Year 2020-Present

A sensitive conversion of the Grade II listed Old County Hall former Cornwall Council Offices into residential use, along with a new sympathetically designed apartment building to the rear with a new attractively landscaped courtyard setting to manage the transition from new to old.

Retention of the existing Old County Hall fabric with minimal and delicate intervention to the façade with new conservation slimline style double glazed windows replace the existing where new features are incorporated. These types located within the internal courtyards are to minimise the visual impact externally to the surrounding streetscape.

The design of the new apartments is contemporary, using a palette of materials that are restrained in colour with subtle variations using durable ageless products in keeping with the existing building, referencing local motifs such as the buff, stone and red brick all work cohesively to the overall design.

Securing sites with unique histories and bringing them back to use, in an environmentally sustainable way, speaks to Acorn’score values and the guiding aims of Acorn Green. Truro’s Old County Hall is an exciting opportunity to create truly unique homes and build a community around its historic courtyards and grounds.
