This new new public shelter and tourtist information centre was designed and delivered by Poynton Bradbury Architects as part of a wider regeneration project for this historic seafront location on the island of St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly.
Named after a famous local shipreck the building is now known as the 'Schiller Shelter'. Set within a sensitively designed and biodiverse landscaped seafront promenade the building design is contemporary whilst meeting with the islands unique characteristics and setting. A significant amount of stakeholder and public consultation was undertaken which was instrumental in developing a shared vision that met the ambitions of the local community.
Planning for a remote island location presented challenges, but close coordination with contractors ensured that logistical and labour supply problems were overcome to create high quality buildings and places.
