Empowering Later Living - A New Care Facility for Cornwall's Aging Population

Cornwall has a higher proportion of elderly residents compared to the national average, in response to the evolving needs, Poynton Bradbury on behalf of Cornwallis Care Services submitted and outline planning application for a 36-bedroom close care and 76-bedroom care home building.

Meadowbrook House is a 42-room residential home specializing in Dementia Nursing while also including those with Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, and respiratory conditions.

The purpose-built facility embraces values of community and inclusivity and aims to enhance the quality of life for older adults living in Cornwall, ensuring that they can age with dignity, independence, and fulfilment.

The proximity to care home provides housing for couples with spouses to live close to their partner while continuing to support and spend as much time with their partner or for someone who has a deteriorating health condition but wants to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.

The design team meticulously adhered to the Housing LIN best practice standards, surpassing mere building regulations. This approach not only ensures compliance but also facilitates a fully flexible solution, enabling long-term planning to accommodate potential changes in the health of occupants.

The architectural style was carefully studied, with the traditional pitched roof emerging as the dominant form, a theme that the proposal seeks to embrace. Delving deeper into the existing colour palette of the surroundings, materials such as brick and metal were identified through thorough analysis and seamlessly integrated into the proposal.

Central to the design philosophy is the landscaping, which aims to create inclusive and accessible garden spaces for both public and private use, enriching the living environment for residents.

Both buildings aim to be sustainable, they will meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ energy performance requirements and incorporate roof-mounted solar panels and air source heat pump.
