The aim of Cornwall Council's 'Schools Basics Needs programme' is to improve and expand schools across the county to ensure sufficient pupil places are provided locally. As part of this programme it was proposed to expand Pennoweth Primary School from its existing capacity of 315 to 420 pupils.

A new single storey extension provides a new glazed entrance for the school and resolves a number of circulation issues within the existing school layout. On arrival to the school a large corner window to the new Small Hall welcomes visitors and provides an opportunity to gain a glimpse of activity before entering reception. The new block provides four new KS2 classrooms, a multi-purpose Small Hall as well as new office and administration spaces. As part of the works an existing classroom within the school is to be refurbished to provide a specialist practical classroom for use by all the pupils. A new fully compliant and accessible hygiene room is to be provided alongside the new WC facilities.

Part of the works is an expansion of the existing car park, as well as providing the school with a new sustainable transport plan with secure covered bicycle and scooter parking.

A natural light coloured brick finish will provide a finish that will age well and blend in with the existing school and the surrounding context. Dark grey coloured window frames and metalwork will provide the building with a contemporary aesthetic suited to its overall form, function and performance.

Working with Poynton Bradbury Architects was an incredibly positive experience. They listened and consulted well, were fastidious in attention to detail and solved problems imaginatively whilst always recognising the needs of the school and the drive to provide exceptional teaching spaces.
