The Clinical Oncology Department in Truro, now known as the Sunrise Centre, opened in 2002 after more than £500,000 was raised by local people towards the cost of the building. The remaining funding came from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, the National Lottery and the Duchy Health Charity.
The cancer treatment unit incorporates a CT scanner and two linear accelerators that use the latest high energy radiotherapy technologies. These are fitted into two specially designed bunkers within the building.
Highly praised by patients, relatives and hospital staff the centre includes an outpatient unit with eight clinical rooms, offices and meetings rooms. The patient waiting area is designed around a central landscaped courtyard that brings natural daylight and ventilation into the heart of the building.
